I teach undergraduate and graduate courses in multiple formats: in-person, online, service learning, and study abroad. My goal is to facilitate an interactive and inclusive learning environment and to draw upon current events to enhance the relevance of course concepts.

EPID 479 | Infections and EpidemicsSpring This 3-unit course covers the basic tenants of infectious disease epidemiology. Through a combination of lectures and interactive in-class activities, students learn about the infectious pathogens that have had the greatest impact throughout human history. Students will learn how to apply epidemiologic study designs to investigate outbreaks, assess accuracy of diagnostic testing, evaluate surveillance systems, assess risk factors for disease, and determine the efficacy of prevention interventions. |
PHP 597C | Border Health Service Learning InstituteSpring Break & 1-2 Evening Sessions (before/after) In this 2-unit highly interactive service learning course, students learn how migration, economics, and globalization affect public health on the US-Mexico border. Students spend a week living on the border and must have a valid passport. See our blog-post on our 2020 live online course modification. We return to the in-person course format in Spring 2022. |

EHS/EPID 455/555 | One Health FoundationsFall Session 1, 7.5-week format This 3-unit course introduces a transdisciplinary One Health framework – which focuses on the interconnection between people, animals and the environment – to examine health drivers and outcomes at local, regional, national, and global levels. The course is taught in an accelerated format and is a required course for new graduate and undergraduate One Health certificates. |
Study Abroad | Cusco, PeruSummer I am the Faculty Lead for a 7-week study accelerated public health program in Peru. Students stay with families in the city of Cusco, where they attend classes taught by UA instructors. For 1-2 days each week, students travel to surrounding rural communities for fieldwork with a local NGO. Join us for a life changing experience while taking EPID 479 (Infections and Epidemics), HPS 433 (Global Health), and HPS 493C (Public Health Field Experience). |

MIC 195F | Plagues, Peoples & SocietySpring This 1-unit colloquium addresses the role of infectious disease epidemics on people and societies throughout history. The topics covered are the origins, geography, and effects of epidemics on peoples and societies, as well as perceptions, beliefs, and attempts at disease control. Causes of and responses to historic epidemics are compared to the current and likely future crises of infectious disease in society. |
EPID 696A | Epidemiology SeminarFall/Spring This seminar consists of presentations and active discussions led by a diverse range of speakers, including the course students, on topics in epidemiologic research and applied epidemiology that may not be available through other courses |
